The Giants defeated the Chicago Bears 32-13 Friday night for week 2 of the preseason. Here are the Studs & Duds from their win.
Studs:
QB Daniel Jones
Jones had another good night despite losing two fumbles. One fumble was a mis-handled snap, and the other was from poor blocking on the right side between the RT and TE. Besides that, Jones went 11/14, 161 yards and 1 TD. Jones continued to show he can make great throws with great placement, and can even make the deep throws, which was a concern by many draft experts.
RB Jon Hilliman
Hilliman was banged up last game forcing him to leave the field. Tonight, Hilliman and the run game as a whole came alive, allocating 132 among all three running backs. Hilliman had 57 of those yards and a touchdown. He was able to show good ball-carrier vision, and had some nice runs heading into the red zone.
WR T.J. Jones
Jones continues to impress this summer. Jones has caught a touchdown in two straight games this preseason. Tonight, he caught a beautifully thrown ball from Daniel Jones for a touchdown. Jones finished the night with 3 catches for 32 yards and a TD. He also had one kick return for 43 yards. Jones almost reminds me of a Corey Coleman type player for the Giants from last year. With Coleman going down this year, this could be Jones’ opportunity to play the role he did last season.
CB Henre Toliver
Toliver has been around many teams, and even spent time in the AAF this past spring. He joined the Giants this summer, where he saw more time tonight due to injuries at the CB position. Toliver finished with 6 solo tackles tonight. This stands out to me because many corners are asked to make plays on the ball, but many struggle making great tackles. That is exactly what Toliver did tonight.
Duds:
WR Alonzo Russell
A player I mentioned to watch for ended up not recording a single catch. Although he is not completely to blame, there was an over throw when he was wide open. One things I would like to recognize is his hustle after the interception on the goal line to save a touch down. With that effort, it was hard to place him here, but I did due to the hype I gave him for this game.
LB Nate Stupar
Stupar dropped an easy pick-six opportunity. He read the play perfectly, had perfect timing on the ball, but let the ball slip right through his hands. Besides that, Stupar had 2 tackles, 1 assisted.
QB Alex Tanney
Tanney made some poor decisions in tonight’s game. Tanney threw one interception on the goal line that was almost taken for a TD until Russell hustled and made the stop. Tanney almost threw another interception when he threw a deep ball over the middle to WR Reggie White Jr. Luckily, White got his hand in there and knocked it out of the defender’s hands. Tanney finished 4/9, 53 yards and 1 INT.
Side Notes:
- Paul Perkins looked much better tonight.
- The “X-man” recorded his first sack of his career.
- DB Kenny Ladler has impressed me this preseason with his tackling skills.
- Totally forgot about WR Brittan Golden but it was good to see him out there making plays.
