Why the Giants drafting Justin Herbert isn’t as crazy as one would think

Folks, we’re just three days away from the 2020 NFL Draft and this morning Ian Rapoport decided to drop an absolute bomb on twitter about the Giants doing their due dilligence on Oregon QB Justin Herbert.

Now as I said earlier on New York Giants 366, there are two possible reasons why the Giants are scouting Justin Herbert:

1. The Giants are trying to increase the trade value of their first round pick and are creating a smokescreen.

2. The Giants couldn’t create a smokescreen at a bonfire so there actually could be some legitimate interest. It is a well known fact that Herbert was the Giants QB1 last year before he decided to return to school and Joe Judge hasn’t once committed to Daniel Jones being the starter despite meeting with the press multiple times.

While there’s likely an 95% chance that it’s option 1, the fact of the matter is that with Dave Gettleman running the show for the Giants it can’t be completely put out of the question. Drafting Herbert a year after he passed on Edge Rusher Josh Allen to take Daniel Jones would be his Mona Lisa for screwing up the future of the Giants. It would be his Ninth Symphony of the stupidity that has plagued his tenure as Giants GM.

Now that doesn’t mean that Justin Herbert is a bad player. Herbert has a great arm and he can make all of the throws with ease. I think his ceiling is incredibly high and it’s definitely much higher than Daniel Jones’s ceiling. I know Giants fans will hate me for saying that but in January 2019 you all would have agreed with me before Herbert went back to school.

That being said, Daniel Jones looked the part his rookie season and there was nothing he did that screamed that we have to take a quarterback this year. Due to the fact that 60% of our offensive line still needs to be replaced and we have no edge rushers, I’d go as far as saying that it would be completely irresponsible to take a quarterback this year. It’d be so irresponsible that Dave Gettleman should be fired on the spot.

When it’s all said and done, I really don’t think that the Giants are going to draft Justin Herbert. I also know that if there’s a list of General Managers stupid enough to make a move like this then Dave Gettleman’s name would be at the top of that list.
