Daniel Jones is Officially Playing for His Job in 2021

Folks, in the most unshocking news of 2020, the Giants are 0-2 for the seventh time in the past eight years.

This season has gone off the rails quickly as the team has looked horrendous. It got even worse today as Saquon Barkley tore his ACL and is now out for the season which is horrible news for both Barkley and the Giants. This takes a huge piece out of our offense and it questions the longevity of Saquon Barkley who has now sustained injuries in back-to-back seasons.

But the most disappointing part of the 2020 season thus far has been Daniel Jones. He really hasn’t looked any better in 2020 than he did in 2019. He is still turning the ball over incessantly. He still has ball security issues. He isn’t processing the game well and he’s making mental errors. It’s not what you want to see out of your second year quarterback.

Now I’m smart enough to know that the offensive line is atrocious in front of him. I also know that he’s learning a new system with Jason Garrett this year. But all of that won’t matter if the Giants finish 2-14 this season and get the first overall pick. If that were to happen, Trevor Lawrence is going to be the quarterback of the New York Giants in 2021 and beyond.

I still believe that Daniel Jones has the ability to be a top 5 quarterback in this league. That being said, he has to start proving it beginning right now. If the Giants end up finishing at or near the bottom of the league then he may get replaced by a quarterback in the draft in Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields who have much higher ceilings than he does. He needs to show that he has the ability to carry a team for the rest of this season or he runs the risk of being replaced. Right now, Jones looks as if he’s on the game manager level of quarterback tiers and if we’re being honest he looks a whole lot closer to Andy Dalton than he does a guy like Dak Prescott.

Plus, in a situation where the Giants get the number one overall pick then there is no trading out of it if you’re the Giants and Trevor Lawrence is sitting there. There is no passing up on the best quarterback prospect to come out since Andrew Luck or potentially even Peyton Manning. It’s Daniel Jones’s job to play the Giants out of that draft position. It has to start next week against the 49ers who are playing a backup quarterback next week.
