Folks, yesterday I wrote a piece proposing that the Giants trade for Arizona Cardinals Quarterback Kyler Murray. In the piece I said that the Giants should trade both first round picks this year, a first next year, Daniel Jones, and Saquon Barkley to acquire Kyler Murray. The response to that piece from the fan base was beyond what I could even imagine in terms of how this team values Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley.
I literally had people arguing with me saying that making that trade would be the equivalent of giving up five first round picks which is complete lunacy. There’s no chance that Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley would have been taken where they were taken if their drafts were re-done. They’d both easily be day two picks based on how their careers have gone so far. That’s not even accounting for the money that it would take to extend both of those players.
But at the end of the day, none of that is what the issue is really about. The issue is that Giants fans are addicted to Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley. They are addicted to both of their rookie seasons where they both showed flashes of potential and promise (more so for Saquon Barkley). They’re still not fully grasping the fact that virtually nothing Dave Gettleman & Co. did over the last four years was meaningful, including drafting these two players.
The reality is that neither of those guys are building blocks for this team anymore. Injuries have taken a toll on both of their careers and the Giants are already working on replacing both of them. The Giants are absolutely trying to get a second first round pick in 2023 to address the quarterback situation and the Giants are likely going to draft Barkley’s replacement in the middle rounds this year. Neither one of these guys will be on the Giants after next season and that’s absolutely for the best.
And no, that’s not a matter of me being a “fake fan” or “not having any belief in our players.” It’s just that I’ve seen enough of Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley in blue to last me a lifetime. If they were players that could help this team be great, I absolutely wouldn’t feel like that. But they’re not and their days as Giants are thankfully numbered.
