It is inevitable that an overachieving team with holes all over the roster needs to be well coached. When teams are well coached, the NFL landscape takes notice. Therefore well coached teams tend to lose coaches to teams looking for upgrades.
The Giants overachieved this season. The Giants coaches were fantastic at squeezing wins out of a roster in the early stages of a rebuild. Some of the Giants coaches are on second interviews with interested teams.
If we lose these coaches, where can we find some solid replacements?
Mike Kafka – Offensive Coordinator
Kafka has been interviewed for Head Coaching positions by the Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. Kafka is currently on his 2nd interview with the Houston Texans.
Potential Replacements:
Shea Tierney: Tierney is the current Quarterbacks Coach for the New York Giants. He helped Daniel Jones improve in his development this year. Tierney is also being considered for open offensive coordinator positions around the NFL. Tierney is a former offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills.
Joe Brady: Brady spent last season as the Quarterback coach for the Buffalo Bills. Brady was the Offensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2020 and 2021. Joe Brady was the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the 2019 National Champion LSU Tigers. Brady coached Joe Burrow during Burrow’s 2019 senior season. Burrow threw for 5600 yards and 60 touchdowns in 2019 under the tutelage of Joe Brady.
Wink Martindale – Defensive Coordinator
Martindale has a 2nd interview with the Indianapolis Colts for their vacant head coaching position.
Potential Replacements:
Eric Washington: Washington is the current Senior Defensive Assistant and Defensive Line Coach for the Buffalo Bills. Washington was the Defensive Coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2018 and 2019.
Vic Fangio: This is a dark horse candidate for Defensive Coordinator. Fangio is not currently coaching in the NFL. He does however hold a distinction as one of the top defensive coaching minds in all of football. If Daboll wants to bring in a similar mind to Martindale, Fangio could be his guy.
Shea Tierney – Quarterbacks Coach
Tierney is interviewing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator position.
Potential Replacements
Davis Webb: Webb was set to move into a coaching role in the 2022 NFL season. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen lured Webb to New York to be the 3rd string / practice squad QB. Webb has made his intentions known that he plans to move into a coaching role. The Giants would do well to see if he would fit into the role left by Shea Tierney.
Mark Lubick: Lubick is the current Assistant Wide Receivers Coach for the Buffalo Bills. Lubick worked under Brian Daboll during Daboll’s time with the Bills. Mark Lubick was Buffalo’s Assistant Quarterback Coach in 2017 before shifting to his current role in 2020. Coach Lubick brings extensive coaching experience to the Giants. He has coached tight ends, wide receivers and quarterbacks in his coaching career. He has also spent some time in Offensive Quality Control and Game Management roles.
